This study aims to examine the effect of product quality of Bolu Menara MSMEs on buying interest of students of the Faculty of Economics, State University of Medan. Product quality is seen as a major factor that determines purchasing decisions, especially among students. The study used quantitative methods with data collection through questionnaires distributed to 30 respondents. The results of the analysis show that the product quality of Bolu Menara has a significant and positive influence on students' purchase intention, with a contribution of 77.4%. Aspects of texture, taste, packaging, and price are important indicators in determining buying interest. The conclusion of this study is that improving product quality has the potential to increase the attractiveness of Bolu Menara as the top choice in the student market. These findings provide strategic insights for MSMEs to develop products that suit the preferences of young consumers.
This study timely investigates the pertinent relationship between product quality, specifically from the 'Bolu Menara' MSME, and the buying interest of Faculty of Economics students at a state university. The authors effectively highlight product quality as a critical determinant in consumer purchasing decisions, a relevant area for both academic research and practical application for small and medium-sized enterprises. The findings suggest a strong positive influence, with product quality contributing substantially (77.4%) to buying interest, identifying texture, taste, packaging, and price as key indicators. This offers valuable, albeit preliminary, strategic insights for MSMEs aiming to tailor their products to the preferences of young consumers. While the study's aim is clear and its focus specific, a significant methodological concern lies with the sample size. Relying on only 30 respondents for a quantitative study, even within a single faculty, raises serious questions regarding the statistical power and the generalizability of the reported findings. Although the analysis indicates a "significant" and "positive" influence, this conclusion must be interpreted with extreme caution given the very limited data points. Such a small sample inherently restricts the representativeness of the data and compromises the robustness of the statistical analysis, potentially leading to spurious correlations or an overestimation of the effect size. In light of these methodological limitations, the study serves more as an initial exploration than a definitive contribution to the literature on product quality and consumer behavior. The insights regarding specific quality aspects (texture, taste, packaging, price) are a useful starting point for the Bolu Menara MSME and provide local relevance. However, to enhance academic rigor and practical applicability, future research is strongly recommended to replicate this study with a substantially larger and more diverse sample. As it stands, the paper provides a specific case study with limited generalizability, best suited for local insights rather than broader academic dissemination.
