Review

This paper, "Satuan Lingual -e dalam Bahasa Jawa Cirebon," presents an insightful descriptive qualitative study on the morphological behavior of the suffix "-e" in Cirebonese Javanese. The research specifically investigates the allomorphs -e and -ne, addressing a notable divergence from the general rules outlined in *Tata Bahasa Jawa Mutakhir*. While standard Javanese grammar suggests a clear distribution based on the preceding final phoneme (consonant for -e, vowel for -ne), the authors critically examine this premise by presenting empirical evidence from Cirebonese Javanese where both allomorphs can attach to words ending in vowels. This initial observation sets the stage for a compelling analysis of linguistic variation within Javanese dialects. The methodology employed is robust and well-suited for a descriptive qualitative investigation, aiming to explain the influence of the word's final phoneme on the selection of -e and -ne. A strength of this study lies in its multi-modal approach to data collection, incorporating both written and spoken sources. Written data are meticulously drawn from literary works such as *Kumpulan Jogregan* and *Demang Karang Kletak*, providing a historical and textual foundation. Complementing this, spoken data are gathered through direct interviews and informal WhatsApp conversations, offering a contemporary and naturalistic perspective on language use. The application of AntConc for data processing ensures systematic handling of the identified words ending with the lingual unit -e, followed by a thorough analysis based on the word's final phoneme, syllable structure, and grammatical category. The findings reveal crucial insights into the morphophonology of Cirebonese Javanese. Contrary to conventional expectations, the study concludes that the allomorph -e is not influenced by the final phoneme of the word it attaches to, whereas -ne does exhibit such influence. More significantly, the research highlights that when the lingual unit -e attaches to words ending in a vowel, it directly impacts the phonotactics of the Javanese language, leading to the formation of novel vowel sequences. This discovery not only contributes substantially to our understanding of the unique characteristics of Cirebonese Javanese but also offers valuable data for broader comparative studies in Javanese dialectology and Austronesian linguistics, challenging established grammatical norms and deepening our appreciation of language variation and change.
