Abstract

ABSTRACT The general view on waste often considers it as something without value. Waste management through separation between organic and non-organic waste is very important to maintain the balance of the ecosystem. The ecobrick method is one creative effort in managing plastic waste into useful products, as well as reducing pollution and the risk of toxins. Pondok Tahfizh Daarul Furqon (Female Section) faces challenges in waste management. Lack of awareness and understanding of the importance of sorting and proper waste management has created less than ideal conditions. This community service activity aims to provide knowledge and skills in managing non-organic waste and implementing the ecobrick method, which is complemented by pre-tests and post-tests to measure the effectiveness of the intervention as an effort to turn waste into economic value. The implementation of this activity involves 40 participants aged 12-19 years. The results obtained indicate a significant improvement in the category scores following the intervention (post-test). The knowledge aspect increased from 25% to 87.5%, the attitude aspect rose from 30.0% to 32.5%, the behaviour aspect remained at 2.5%, and the parenting aspect improved from 77.5% to 82.5%. This increase in knowledge, attitude, and behavior requires a commitment to maintain the consistency of santri in waste management. The importance of monitoring and evaluation, as well as product innovation, including product development, should be considered so that economic value can be more meaningful. Suggestions for the future are to establish a waste bank or partner with community groups in the pondok environment.

Review

This paper presents a timely and highly relevant intervention focusing on plastic waste management through the ecobrick method at Pondok Tahfizh Daarul Furqon. The general premise, that waste is often undervalued, sets the stage for a creative solution aimed at transforming plastic into useful products and mitigating environmental pollution. The study effectively identifies a crucial problem of inadequate waste management and low awareness within the target community. By employing a community service approach complemented with pre- and post-tests, the authors aimed to impart knowledge and skills, while also exploring the potential for economic value creation from waste. The participation of 40 female santri aged 12-19 ensures the intervention targets a formative age group, making the initiative particularly valuable for fostering long-term habits. A significant strength of this work lies in its clear objective and the demonstrated success in improving participants' knowledge. The remarkable increase in knowledge scores from 25% to 87.5% post-intervention is a testament to the effectiveness of the educational component of the program. This highlights the potential of structured interventions to significantly enhance understanding of waste management principles and the ecobrick method. Furthermore, the focus on turning waste into economic value provides a practical and motivational aspect, which is essential for encouraging sustainable practices. The paper also deserves credit for its practical application in a specific institutional setting, directly addressing a local environmental challenge with a tangible solution. While the knowledge gain is impressive, the abstract reveals areas for further consideration and improvement. The impact on attitude (a slight increase from 30.0% to 32.5%) and, critically, the stagnant behavior aspect (remaining at 2.5%) indicate a significant gap between knowledge acquisition and its translation into consistent action. Future iterations of such interventions should explore more robust strategies to foster lasting behavioral change, possibly through extended practical application, peer mentoring, or incentive-based systems. Additionally, while the suggestion of establishing a waste bank or community partnerships is excellent, the paper would benefit from elaborating on concrete plans for realizing the economic value beyond the training, such as market linkages for ecobrick products. Further research should ideally include longer-term follow-up to assess the sustainability of the learned practices and the actual implementation of proposed solutions for ongoing waste management.
