Abstract

Artikeln handlar om två krigsbrevväxlingar från 1808-1809-års krig. Den ena är Zachris Dunckers brevväxling med hans fru, vilken är särkilt intressant för att han är en av Johan Ludvig Runebergs stora hjältar i dikteposet Fänriks Ståls sägner Den andra brevväxlingen utgörs av korrespondens mellan sedermera överste Berndt Adolf Grotenfelt och hans maka. Fokus i artikeln är den omsorg som paren har om varandra och som uttrycks i breven under krigets alla skeden och den oro man känner när man inte hör nyheter från varandra. Brevskrivningen visar hur viktigt det vara att hålla kontakten hem även under svåra förhållanden - och att den ryska armén genom att frambefordra breven tillmötesgick fiendens begäran. Breven visar dock bara del av krigets verklighet, man får ett intryck av att boendet för officerarna ordnades rätt bra i varje fall i början av kriget. Det som man däremot inte får en inblick är om manskapets lott. Man vet att av Savolaxbrigadens ca 3500 män återkom endast något över 700 efter kriget. Artikeln stärvar därför också att kontrastera det runebergska hjältemodet med det hjältemod som den vardagliga krigsföringen krävde.
