Abstract

Review

This study provides a valuable analysis of the Functional Feeding Group (FFG) composition of macrozoobenthos in Situ Gunung Putri, highlighting a crucial aspect of aquatic ecosystem function and bioassessment. The clearly stated objective to analyze FFG distribution within this specific West Java lake, coupled with a well-defined methodology encompassing sampling across five distinct stations – ranging from industrial/residential inlets to agricultural zones and outlets – demonstrates a systematic approach. The inclusion of physico-chemical parameter measurements alongside macrozoobenthos sampling further enhances the potential for ecological interpretation. The research identified 22 macrozoobenthos species, categorized into three FFGs: scrapers, collector gatherers, and collector filterers. A key finding is the consistent dominance of the scrapers across all sampling stations, followed by collector gatherers and then collector filterers, indicating a particular trophic structure within the lake. Moreover, the study reveals a highly significant correlation (r > 0.7) between collector gatherers and several environmental parameters, specifically water depth, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen. This strong statistical relationship points towards specific environmental drivers influencing the distribution and abundance of this particular FFG. While the study successfully identifies the prominent FFGs and significant environmental correlations, a more in-depth discussion on the ecological implications of these findings would greatly enrich its contribution. For instance, exploring what the widespread dominance of scrapers suggests about the primary productivity, substrate stability, and overall trophic state of Situ Gunung Putri could provide valuable ecological context. Similarly, expanding on the potential causal mechanisms linking water depth, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen to the collector gatherer community, perhaps in relation to the specific conditions at each sampling station, would offer a clearer understanding of the lake's ecological health under varying anthropogenic influences. This research provides a strong baseline for future studies focusing on ecosystem health and management strategies for this important water body.
