This study addresses a critical and under-researched area concerning the relationship between bullying and mental health among children in modern Islamic boarding schools. Utilizing a quantitative, cross-sectional design with a sample of 104 students, the research employed established instruments—a Victim Questionnaire and the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ)—to assess these variables. A striking finding is that all sampled respondents reported experiencing bullying, underscoring the pervasive nature of the issue within this specific pesantren environment. The statistically significant p-value (0.005) from the Chi-Square test robustly supports the conclusion that a relationship exists between bullying incidents and mental health challenges, with a notable proportion (62 respondents) indicating mental health disturbances. This study provides valuable preliminary evidence highlighting the urgent need for intervention in these unique educational settings. While the study offers important insights, several aspects of the abstract could benefit from clarification and more robust detail. The strong statement that "no respondents did not experience bullying problems, meaning all respondents experienced bullying" requires further context regarding the definition, frequency, and severity thresholds used for "experiencing bullying" as measured by the victim questionnaire. Furthermore, the categorization of "low bullying victim" (over 80%) and "moderate bullying victim" (19.2%) is somewhat ambiguous; it is unclear if this refers to the frequency, intensity, or type of bullying experienced, or the severity of its impact. The abstract also lacks specific demographic characteristics of the sample beyond the total number, which would be crucial for understanding the generalizability of findings. Finally, while a significant relationship is reported, the abstract does not indicate the direction or strength of this association, which would enhance the interpretation of the Chi-Square result. Despite these points, this study makes a significant contribution by drawing attention to the mental health implications of bullying in Islamic boarding schools, a context often overlooked in broader bullying research. The clear and actionable policy recommendations for the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Health Department are highly relevant, suggesting a collaborative approach to develop structured prevention policies, robust reporting mechanisms, and targeted training for staff. Future research should aim to explore the specific types and impact of bullying experiences, delve deeper into the nature of the mental health issues observed, and consider longitudinal designs to establish causality. Expanding the scope to multiple pesantren would also enhance the generalizability of findings and inform more comprehensive national policies. The paper serves as a vital call to action for stakeholders to address bullying and support mental well-being in these unique educational environments.
