Abstract

Review

The paper, "REPRESENTASI KECANTIKAN VISUAL DIGITAL MELALUI FILTER SNOW AI DI INSTAGRAM," offers a timely and pertinent examination of how digital beauty standards are constructed and disseminated through social media filters. Utilizing a netnographic approach to analyze 30 Instagram posts and 643 user comments incorporating Snow AI filters, the study insightfully investigates the shaping of digital beauty by popular Korean aesthetics and user responses to these standards. The robust theoretical framework, drawing on Roland Barthes' visual semiotics, Jean Baudrillard's hyperreality, Lev Manovich's digital visual aesthetics, and Alice E. Marwick's self-branding, provides a multi-faceted lens through which to dissect the complex interplay of technology, culture, and identity. The research effectively highlights how Snow AI filters homogenize ideal body constructions, reflecting dominant global beauty ideals and creating a hyperreal environment where filtered images are perceived as more ideal than reality, further solidified by social validation. While the study presents compelling findings, some areas could be elaborated or further nuanced. The reliance on 30 posts and 643 comments, while substantial for qualitative analysis, might prompt questions regarding the broader generalizability of the findings across diverse user demographics or other social media platforms. It would be beneficial to consider if there are instances of user resistance, ironic use, or critical engagement with these filters that deviate from pure acceptance of the dominant beauty standards. Furthermore, while the abstract eloquently describes the creation of a "hyperrealitas" and "identitas digital," a deeper exploration into the psychological impact of this separation between digital and real identities on users' self-esteem and mental well-being would significantly enrich the discussion. A comparative analysis with other filter types or cultural contexts could also offer a more comprehensive understanding of the specific influence of Korean beauty standards via Snow AI. Despite these minor considerations, this research makes a valuable contribution to the fields of digital media studies, cultural studies, and identity formation in the virtual sphere. By demonstrating the powerful role of visual technology filters in constructing beauty, influencing identity dynamics, and shaping body representation, the paper offers critical insights into contemporary digital culture. Its findings underscore the importance of media literacy in navigating increasingly filtered digital landscapes and highlight the ideological underpinnings of seemingly innocuous technological tools. Future research could expand upon these findings by exploring longitudinal impacts of filter usage, investigating cross-cultural variations in filter aesthetics and reception, or examining the platform providers' roles and responsibilities in the proliferation of such beauty standards. This paper serves as an essential read for anyone interested in the evolving relationship between technology, beauty, and self-representation in the digital age.
