Abstract

Este trabalho analisa os elementos discursivos que permeiam o romance literário Kim Ji-young, Born in 1982 de Cho Nam-joo (2020) e sua adaptação cinematográfica (Kim, 2019). Tanto o romance quanto o filme homônimo tornaram-se símbolos das lutas sociais e dos debates contemporâneos relacionados à equidade de gênero na Coreia do Sul. Diante disso, o estudo considera que o processo de adaptação influencia escolhas discursivas e, consequentemente, a construção de sentido, enquanto concentra-se na representação das questões de gênero na sociedade sul-coreana. A fim de averiguar as abordagens e ressignificações realizadas pelas obras, conduziu-se uma pesquisa bibliográfica qualitativa, com suporte de autores como Linda Hutcheon (2006) sobre teoria da adaptação, além de Cho Hae-joang (1995, 1998), Cho Hye-young (2024) e Cho e Song (2024) acerca das estruturas sociais e culturais que sustentam o sexismo no século XXI, sobretudo nesse contexto. Assim, a análise parte da comparação entre aspectos narrativos, discursivos e estéticos presentes, associados a temas como maternidade, trabalho e saúde mental para compreender as dinâmicas de poder e identidade representados. Os resultados apontam que cada narrativa, por meio de sua própria linguagem e recursos, reforça a discussão sobre o papel e a participação da mulher nas esferas doméstica e pública.

This paper proposes a timely and relevant analysis of gender representation within Cho Nam-joo's novel *Kim Ji-young, Born in 1982* and its subsequent film adaptation. The study effectively situates these works as pivotal cultural artifacts that symbolize ongoing social struggles and contemporary debates surrounding gender equity in South Korea. A central premise of the research, that the adaptation process itself significantly influences discursive choices and thus the construction of meaning, particularly regarding the depiction of gender issues prevalent in South Korean society, provides a compelling foundation for the investigation. To achieve its objectives, the authors employed a qualitative bibliographic research methodology, commendably supported by a robust theoretical framework. The analysis draws on Linda Hutcheon's foundational work on adaptation theory to understand the transformations between media, and critically on the scholarship of Cho Hae-joang, Cho Hye-young, and Cho and Song, which provides essential context on the social and cultural structures underpinning 21st-century sexism within the South Korean context. The study meticulously compares narrative, discursive, and aesthetic elements across both versions, focusing on key thematic areas such as motherhood, work, and mental health, to unravel the power dynamics and identity representations at play. The findings indicate that both the literary and cinematic narratives, each leveraging their unique linguistic and aesthetic resources, effectively reinforce and deepen the critical discussion surrounding women's roles and participation in both the domestic and public spheres. This comparative analysis offers valuable insights into how different media platforms articulate and re-articulate pressing social issues, contributing significantly to our understanding of adaptation as a process of cultural re-signification. The paper effectively demonstrates the enduring power of *Kim Ji-young, Born in 1982* as a cultural touchstone for feminist discourse, making it a relevant contribution to gender studies, media studies, and Korean literary and film criticism.
