Abstract

AbstractHuman resource-based health efforts are a form of active community participation in supporting health development, one of which is thru the use of Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA). TOGA plays an important role as an alternative for self-treatment, especially for families who do not have access to formal healthcare services. This Community Service Activity (PKM) aims to increase the knowledge of the people of Semenpinggir Village, Kapas District, Bojonegoro Regency, about the benefits and utilization of medicinal plants (TOGA), while also promoting independence in maintaining health. The implementation method involved 21 local community participants using an extension approach, planting demonstrations, and mentoring. The instruments used were observation sheets and pre-post questionnaires to measure knowledge improvement. Data were analyzed descriptively to see changes before and after the activity. The results of the activity show an increase in community knowledge about the benefits of medicinal plants, as well as a growing interest and skill in cultivating these plants in home gardens. In conclusion, the cultivation of medicinal plants is effective as a step toward empowering communities to improve family health and independence, especially in areas with limited access to healthcare services.

Review

This abstract describes a highly relevant community service initiative focused on leveraging traditional knowledge and local resources for public health improvement. The project effectively addresses a critical need in areas with limited access to formal healthcare by empowering communities through the cultivation and utilization of Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA). The clear objective of increasing knowledge and fostering independence in health management is commendable, and the practical, hands-on approach outlined provides a solid foundation for local health promotion. The emphasis on human resource-based health efforts underscores a sustainable model for community development. The methodology employed, involving 21 local community participants, is appropriate for a community-based intervention. The use of an extension approach, practical planting demonstrations, and ongoing mentoring is particularly strong, as it ensures both knowledge transfer and skill development, rather than just passive information dissemination. The inclusion of pre-post questionnaires and observation sheets to measure knowledge improvement is a robust method for evaluating the immediate impact of the intervention. The reported results, showing a demonstrable increase in community knowledge, interest, and skill in TOGA cultivation, clearly indicate the project's success in achieving its immediate goals and suggest effective execution of the community engagement strategies. While the abstract highlights clear positive outcomes regarding knowledge and interest, it would benefit from further detail on the *extent* of knowledge improvement (e.g., specific pre-post scores or average percentage increase) and how "growing interest and skill" was quantified or observed. For future initiatives, exploring the long-term sustainability of TOGA cultivation and its actual impact on health outcomes (e.g., reduced incidence of common ailments, decreased reliance on formal healthcare for minor issues, or improved self-reported well-being) through follow-up studies would significantly strengthen the evidence base. Nevertheless, this initiative provides a valuable and replicable model for sustainable, community-led health interventions, particularly in resource-constrained settings, encouraging further integration of traditional health practices within public health frameworks.
