Abstract

This community service program aims to improve the understanding, skills, and environmental awareness of batik artisans in Probolinggo City through the processing of batik textile waste based on a circular economy as an implementation of green industry policies. The method applied in this program employed a participatory approach or Participatory Action Research (PAR). The partners involved were 10 batik artisans and batik fashion tailors in Probolinggo City. Data collection instruments included questionnaires, interviews, and direct observations, which were analyzed descriptively. The results of the program indicated an increase in the partners’ understanding and skills related to the knowledge and techniques of managing batik textile waste within a circular economy system as part of green industry practices. In addition, the partners experienced improved income and heightened awareness in managing batik textile waste into products with significant functional, historical, and economic value. The batik artisans also demonstrated strong environmental concern and enhanced commitment toward green industry branding.

Review

This manuscript presents a highly relevant and timely community service initiative focused on empowering batik artisans in Probolinggo City through circular economy principles. The program, titled "Pendampingan Pengrajin Batik Berbasis Ekonomi Sirkular Melalui Olahan Limbah Tekstil Batik Sebagai Wujud Implementasi Kebijakan Industri Hijau," directly addresses critical issues of environmental sustainability and economic empowerment within the traditional craft sector. The abstract clearly articulates the project's aim: to enhance understanding, skills, and environmental awareness among artisans by transforming batik textile waste into valuable products, thereby aligning with green industry policies. A significant strength of this program lies in its methodological approach, employing Participatory Action Research (PAR) with a focus on active engagement of 10 batik artisans and tailors. This participatory model is ideally suited for community-based interventions, fostering ownership and ensuring the relevance of the solutions to the beneficiaries' real-world challenges. The reported outcomes are commendable, indicating a clear increase in participants' knowledge and technical skills in waste management within a circular economy framework. Furthermore, the program successfully contributed to tangible improvements, including enhanced income for artisans, heightened environmental awareness, and a stronger commitment to adopting green industry practices and branding, demonstrating a holistic positive impact. While the abstract provides a compelling overview of the program's success, a comprehensive journal article would benefit from further elaboration on several aspects. For instance, detailing the *specific techniques* developed and implemented for processing batik textile waste would be invaluable for replication by other communities. Quantifying the *increase in income* and the *volume or percentage of waste reduced* could provide more robust evidence of economic and environmental impact. Additionally, discussing the *long-term sustainability mechanisms* for these circular economy practices beyond the program's intervention period, as well as any *challenges encountered* during implementation and how they were overcome, would significantly enrich the findings and offer critical insights for policy-makers and practitioners aiming to scale such initiatives. Nevertheless, this abstract clearly outlines a highly impactful and well-executed community service project with significant implications for sustainable development in the craft industry.
