Abstract

Program pengabdian ini menerapkan teknologi pirolisis berbasis Internet of Things (IoT) untuk mengonversi sampah plastik menjadi bahan bakar alternatif melalui pendekatan participatory community-based implementation.

Review

This journal submission presents a highly relevant and timely community empowerment program addressing the critical issue of plastic waste management in urban settings, specifically in Kelurahan Mulyaharja, Bogor. The abstract clearly articulates the pressing problem of unmanaged household plastic waste leading to environmental pollution and health risks due to prevalent burning and dumping practices. The innovative approach of integrating Internet of Things (IoT) technology with pyrolysis for converting plastic waste into alternative fuel, coupled with a participatory community-based implementation strategy, positions this initiative as a significant contribution to sustainable waste solutions. The program's objective to enhance community capacity in plastic waste management is well-defined and directly tackles a pertinent societal challenge. The methodology employed, encompassing needs analysis, tool design and fabrication, comprehensive training, and ongoing operational assistance, appears robust for a community engagement project. The abstract highlights impressive outcomes, including the successful and stable operation of the IoT-based pyrolysis prototype at a community scale. Notably, the program achieved a high success rate, with over 70% of participating residents demonstrating independent operation of the equipment, underscoring the effectiveness of the training. Furthermore, the survey results indicating high environmental concern (76%) and perceived benefits (86%) among residents reflect the program's positive impact on awareness and engagement. Tangible behavioral changes, such as reduced burning and dumping of waste, along with the formation of community-based management groups, signify a real shift towards more sustainable practices. The practical utilization of the pyrolysis oil as an alternative fuel for simple equipment further demonstrates the immediate utility of the technology. Overall, this program demonstrates a commendable model for community empowerment through appropriate technology adoption. Its strengths lie in its participatory approach, successful integration of advanced technology (IoT) within a community context, and its direct measurable impact on community capacity and environmental behavior. While the abstract effectively showcases the initial successes and benefits, future research or follow-up activities could explore the long-term sustainability mechanisms of the community groups, the economic viability of the pyrolysis products beyond simple equipment, and the potential for scaling up this model to other communities. A more detailed analysis of the quality and range of applications for the alternative fuel produced could also enhance the study's contribution. Nevertheless, this initiative provides valuable insights into effective community-led waste management and serves as an excellent foundation for fostering sustainable practices and strengthening multi-stakeholder coordination at the local level.
