This study undertakes a semiotic analysis of Tere Liye's novel, *Yang Telah Lama Pergi*, aiming to uncover profound meanings embedded within its text through the identification and interpretation of symbols, icons, and indices. The abstract outlines a qualitative, descriptive research approach, utilizing hermeneutic techniques of reading, note-taking, and concluding. The stated problem formulation focuses on identifying the semiotic elements of icon, index, and symbol within the novel, with the broader objective of understanding how these signs interact to create a complex web of meaning and to define semiotic theory through its application to literary works. The research meticulously details its findings, providing a quantitative breakdown of the identified semiotic elements: 12 instances of icons, a substantial 54 instances of indices, and 34 instances of symbols. A key conclusion drawn from this data is the prominent role of the index aspect, which the authors link to causal and cause-effect relationships arising within the cultural context depicted in the novel. This focus on indexical signs and their connection to narrative causality within a specific cultural framework offers a structured approach to textual analysis, moving beyond mere content summary to a more analytical understanding of the novel's construction of meaning. While the study provides a robust descriptive account of semiotic elements and their prevalence, the abstract suggests that the full paper could benefit from a more explicit theoretical discussion on *how* these identified signs coalesce to form "more profound" or "more complex" meanings, beyond simply cataloging them. The strength lies in its systematic application of semiotic theory to a popular Indonesian novel, offering a clear framework for understanding its internal logic and cultural resonances. However, to further enhance its impact, the research could delve deeper into the interpretive implications of the identified indexical relationships, perhaps exploring their ideological underpinnings or their role in shaping reader perception, thereby moving from description to a more critical engagement with the text's semiotic landscape.
