This study explores the fiqh-based interpretation of the well-known hadith concerning the division of the Muslim ummah into 73 sects, in which only one is deemed "saved." Rather than viewing this hadith as a justification for sectarianism and exclusion, this research approaches it through the lens of classical and contemporary Islamic jurisprudence to emphasize tolerance, unity, and the ethical management of religious differences. The analysis draws from diverse sources within Sunni scholarship to understand the historical and theological context of the hadith and its misinterpretation by radical or exclusivist groups. This paper argues that the "saved group" (al-firqat al-nājiyah) should not be monopolized by any particular sect or school of thought, but rather should be understood as those committed to the core Islamic principles of tawhid, justice, and mercy. Furthermore, the study highlights the relevance of fiqh in addressing challenges of pluralism, political fragmentation, and intra-Muslim intolerance in modern societies. By promoting values such as ukhuwah Islamiyyah (Islamic brotherhood), tasamuh (tolerance), and ijma’ (scholarly consensus), this research suggests that Islamic law offers strong foundations for fostering cohesion in the Muslim world. The findings urge contemporary Muslims to embrace differences as a source of strength, not division, and to actively contribute to unity without erasing diversity.
This paper, "MENJAGA KESATUAN DALAM PERBEDAAN: STUDI ATAS HADIS 73 GOLONGAN DAN IMPLIKASINYA DALAM KEHIDUPAN KONTEMPORER," addresses a critically important and often contentious issue within Islamic discourse: the hadith concerning the division of the Muslim ummah into 73 sects. The study commendably pivots away from a common, divisive interpretation, instead advocating for a fiqh-based approach that emphasizes tolerance, unity, and the constructive management of religious differences. This reinterpretation is highly timely and relevant, offering a much-needed perspective in an era often marked by sectarian strife and exclusivist tendencies. The abstract clearly articulates a progressive stance that seeks to transform a potentially polarizing narrative into a foundation for cohesion. The research's strength lies in its proposed redefinition of the "saved group" (al-firqat al-nājiyah). Rather than confining it to a specific sect or school of thought, the paper argues for understanding it as encompassing those committed to the fundamental Islamic principles of *tawhid* (Oneness of God), justice, and mercy. This inclusive interpretation, grounded in diverse Sunni scholarship, directly challenges radical or exclusivist misinterpretations of the hadith. By drawing on classical and contemporary Islamic jurisprudence, the study effectively demonstrates how *fiqh* can be a powerful tool not for division, but for addressing modern challenges such as pluralism, political fragmentation, and intra-Muslim intolerance, promoting values like *ukhuwah Islamiyyah* (Islamic brotherhood), *tasamuh* (tolerance), and *ijma’* (scholarly consensus). Overall, this paper makes a significant contribution to contemporary Islamic studies by providing a robust theological and jurisprudential framework for fostering unity in diversity. Its findings strongly advocate for an active embrace of differences as a source of strength rather than division, urging Muslims to contribute to unity without erasing the richness of their diverse expressions. The implications for promoting peace and mutual understanding within the Muslim world, and indeed in interfaith contexts, are substantial. This research offers a compelling intellectual resource for scholars and practitioners seeking to navigate religious pluralism with wisdom and compassion.
