Review

The article, "Los espacios forenses de colonia Augusta Firma “ Astigi (Écija, Sevilla, España)," proposes a timely and significant update on the understanding of the public civic spaces, specifically the fora, of the Roman colony of Astigi (modern-day Écija, Seville). The abstract clearly indicates that knowledge in this area has advanced considerably in the early 21st century, primarily due to recent archaeological interventions. This study is highly relevant for scholars of Roman urbanism, provincial administration, and civic life in Hispania Baetica, promising to fill crucial gaps in our understanding of a major Roman *colonia*. The proposed paper promises a comprehensive "estado de la cuestión" (state of the art) regarding the articulation of Astigi's forensic spaces. This approach is particularly valuable given the influx of new data derived from extensive archaeological excavations, notably those conducted in the Plaza de España and often linked to urban development projects. By synthesizing information on the primary edifices, significant decorative elements, and critical epigraphic evidence, the authors aim to present a holistic picture of these central public areas. Such a synthesis is essential for integrating disparate findings and providing a coherent understanding of the spatial and functional organization of the Roman city. Overall, this contribution appears to be a significant and much-needed synthesis of current knowledge concerning the public heart of Colonia Augusta Firma Astigi. The reliance on recent, large-scale archaeological data suggests a robust foundation for the discussion, and the focus on both architectural remains and movable finds (decoration, epigraphy) ensures a multi-faceted analysis. The article will undoubtedly serve as a critical reference point for future research on Roman urbanism in southern Spain, offering valuable insights into the planning, monumentalization, and social dynamics of a key Roman colonial settlement. It is poised to be an essential resource for Roman archaeologists, historians, and classicists specializing in Hispania.
