Abstract

This community service program aims to strengthen the visual identity and navigation system of a tourism village through the application of Environmental Graphic Design (EGD) while simultaneously enhancing the local community’s skills in managing digital promotion. The implementation method adopted a community-based participatory approach consisting of five stages: socialization, training, technology implementation, mentoring, and continuous evaluation. Evaluation was conducted using field observation instruments, structured interviews, and visitor satisfaction questionnaires. The data were analyzed descriptively, both quantitatively and qualitatively, to assess the effectiveness of the design and the improvement of partner capacity. The outcomes of this community service program include the installation of seven thematic signage units, one interactive digital tourism map, and one identity mural, as well as the improvement of the tourism awareness group’s (Pokdarwis) skills in environmental graphic design and digital promotional content management. The implementation of EGD has proven effective in strengthening the visual image of the destination, improving visitor comfort and orientation, and promoting the sustainable growth of village-based creative economies.

Review

This paper presents a highly relevant community service program focused on leveraging Environmental Graphic Design (EGD) to enhance the visual identity and navigation of tourism villages. The initiative's dual aim of improving the physical visitor experience through strategic design while simultaneously empowering local communities with digital promotion skills is commendable. This integrated approach addresses a critical need for emerging tourism destinations, particularly in strengthening their unique branding and wayfinding systems, which are fundamental to attracting visitors and fostering local engagement. The clear articulation of the program's objectives sets a strong foundation for understanding its scope and potential impact. The methodology adopted is robust and exemplary, emphasizing a community-based participatory approach through five distinct stages: socialization, training, technology implementation, mentoring, and continuous evaluation. This phased and iterative process demonstrates a commitment to sustainable community development rather than merely a one-off intervention. The comprehensive evaluation strategy, incorporating field observations, structured interviews, and visitor satisfaction questionnaires, provides a multi-faceted perspective on the program's effectiveness. The subsequent descriptive analysis, integrating both quantitative and qualitative data, ensures a thorough assessment of both the tangible design outcomes and the qualitative improvements in community capacity and visitor experience. The outcomes reported are concrete and directly align with the program's objectives. The installation of specific EGD elements, including thematic signage, an interactive digital map, and an identity mural, signifies successful physical implementation. Crucially, the improvement in the local tourism awareness group's (Pokdarwis) skills in EGD and digital content management underscores the program's success in capacity building, which is vital for long-term sustainability and self-reliance. The abstract's conclusion that EGD has effectively strengthened the destination's visual image, enhanced visitor comfort and orientation, and contributed to sustainable creative economic growth highlights the significant positive impact of this well-executed initiative, offering valuable insights for similar development efforts in community-based tourism.
