Abstract

Review

This study investigates the pertinent relationship between body dissatisfaction and eating behavior among students at Universitas ‘Aisyiyah Yogyakarta. The abstract effectively highlights the prevalence of body dissatisfaction, defining it as a negative self-evaluation influenced by perceived discrepancies between one's physical condition and an ideal body concept, which can manifest in diverse forms. The premise that such dissatisfaction can lead to detrimental eating behaviors, ranging from extreme restriction to overeating, underscores the importance and relevance of this research in understanding student well-being and potential risk factors for disordered eating patterns within this specific demographic. The clear objective to identify this relationship sets a focused goal for the investigation. The methodology employed a cross-sectional design with quota sampling to gather data from 105 student respondents. Data collection utilized standardized instruments: the Figure Rating Scale for body image and the Eating Attitude Test for eating behavior, providing a robust basis for measurement. Statistical analysis, performed using chi-square tests with STATA 14, revealed significant findings. A substantial portion of the sample, 55%, reported negative body image, while 58% exhibited abnormal eating behaviors. Crucially, the study determined an Odds Ratio (OR) of 2.5, indicating that students experiencing body dissatisfaction are 2.5 times more likely to exhibit abnormal eating behaviors, with a statistically significant p-value of 0.02. The findings unequivocally demonstrate a significant association between body dissatisfaction and eating behavior among the surveyed students. This outcome is highly relevant for public health and university-based interventions, suggesting a need for programs that promote positive body image and healthy eating habits among this vulnerable population. While the cross-sectional design effectively identifies correlation, it inherently limits the ability to infer causality; thus, it would be beneficial for future research to consider longitudinal studies to explore the temporal dynamics and potential causal pathways. Nevertheless, this study provides valuable empirical evidence affirming the link between these two crucial constructs in an Indonesian university context, offering foundational data for further investigation and targeted support strategies.
