Abstract

Review

This study addresses a highly pertinent and timely issue concerning smartphone addiction among junior high school adolescents, a phenomenon with acknowledged significant impacts on various aspects of their daily lives. The abstract effectively highlights the growing concern, evidenced by reports from educators and parents regarding observable signs of addiction such as declining concentration, reduced physical activity, and changes in lifestyle and sleep patterns among 7th-grade students. The research aims to explore this issue within SMPN 1 Arjasa, specifically focusing on identifying the level of smartphone addiction, its contributing factors, and associated impacts. This objective is commendable given the widespread concern about digital well-being in young populations. Methodologically, the study employs a descriptive quantitative approach, utilizing a questionnaire based on the Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS) as its primary data collection instrument. While the SAS is a recognized tool for assessing smartphone addiction severity, the abstract's presentation of results is somewhat minimalistic. The reported highest mean score of 2.8 (SD 1.05935) and lowest mean score of 1.9 (SD 0.42164) lack crucial context regarding what these scores signify in terms of addiction levels or prevalence within the study population. More critically, the abstract indicates that the study also aimed to identify "factors" and "impacts" related to smartphone addiction, as well as the students' "level of understanding" of the phenomenon. However, it only explicitly mentions the SAS as the data collection instrument. It is unclear how a single scale, primarily designed to measure addiction *level*, would comprehensively capture factors, impacts, and understanding without additional instruments or qualitative components, which are not mentioned. This gap raises questions about the scope and depth of data collection relative to the stated objectives. Despite these methodological ambiguities in the abstract, the study holds potential value in shedding light on smartphone addiction within a specific school context in Indonesia. To enhance its contribution and clarity, future iterations or full manuscript presentations should provide a detailed interpretation of the SAS scores, linking them directly to identified addiction levels or prevalence rates. Furthermore, if the study indeed investigated factors, impacts, and understanding, the methodology section must clearly articulate how these objectives were met, detailing any additional instruments or analytical approaches beyond the SAS. Elucidating the sample size and demographic characteristics would also strengthen the generalizability and interpretability of the findings. Overall, this research tackles a vital subject, and with more comprehensive methodological reporting and result interpretation, it could significantly contribute to our understanding and inform interventions against adolescent smartphone addiction.
