This study aims to explain the distribution network of cow’s milk and its impact on farmers’ income on the slopes of Merapi. The research uses a qualitative approach. The research is located in Wukirsari Village, Cangkringan District, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta. The subject of this research is the farmer-herder community in the Cangkringan District. The informants consisted of 7 farmers, eight distributors, and three koperasi employees, and the study was conducted for 2 months. The data collection techniques were interviews, observations, and documentation. The validity of the data is tested through source and method triangulation techniques. Data is analyzed qualitatively, including data collection, condensation, presentation, and conclusion. Farmers are assisted by cooperatives in the milk production process, from cow care to milking. The co-operative is a means of supporting the income of dairy farmers. Milk distribution in Wukirsari is carried out by cooperatives to milk agents, milk processing industries, culinary milk, and directly to consumers. Farmers’ income in Wukirsari depends on the daily milk farmers’ deposit or value. However, the income is still insufficient to meet the needs because the cost of cow care and cow feed cuts it. Therefore, farmers make up for the lack of needs with part-time jobs such as collecting wood, selling calves, and selling grass.
This study, "Dairy Milk Distribution Network and Its Impact on the Income of Dairy Farmers in Wukirsari Village Community, Sleman," tackles a highly relevant issue concerning agricultural economics and rural livelihoods. The paper's primary objective is to delineate the cow's milk distribution network and analyze its consequences for dairy farmers' income in the Merapi slopes region. Utilizing a qualitative approach centered in Wukirsari Village, Cangkringan District, Sleman, the research effectively grounds its inquiry within a specific local context, making its findings pertinent to similar agricultural communities facing comparable challenges. The research highlights the crucial supportive role of cooperatives in the milk production process, from animal care to milking, positioning them as vital institutions for dairy farmers' income stability. The identified distribution channels are well-outlined, showcasing a multi-faceted approach involving cooperatives, milk agents, processing industries, culinary businesses, and direct consumer sales. However, a significant finding underscores that despite these established networks and cooperative support, farmers' income, derived from daily milk deposits, remains inadequate to meet their fundamental needs due to high cow care and feed costs. This deficit compels farmers to seek supplementary income through part-time endeavors like collecting wood, selling calves, and selling grass. The qualitative methodology, which employs interviews, observations, and documentation with a diverse range of informants (farmers, distributors, and cooperative employees), lends depth and validity to the findings, further strengthened by source and method triangulation. While the abstract effectively conveys the income inadequacy and the farmers' coping strategies, a more detailed exploration of the specific financial mechanics, such as a quantitative breakdown of costs versus revenues or an analysis of pricing structures within the distribution network, would provide a more robust understanding of the "impact" beyond the stated insufficiency. Future studies could build upon this foundation by integrating more granular economic analysis or exploring policy recommendations aimed at enhancing the financial sustainability of dairy farmers in similar settings.
