Creative products based on local wisdom derived from mural paintings of suphan buri province, thailand. Discover creative products from Suphan Buri mural paintings in Thailand. Research designed unique items, held workshops, achieving high satisfaction & promoting local wisdom.
Mural painting is a branch of fine art that reflects the excellent culture of Thailand and the development of creative products based on local resources to add value to the community. Promoting community-based tourism is implementing knowledge and findings from the study of mural paintings to be developed into creative products to create value-added local wisdom knowledge. The objectives of this research were to 1) design creative products based on local wisdom derived from mural paintings and 2) organise training and a workshop to pass on the knowledge of creating creative products based on the wisdom of the mural paintings of Suphan Buri Province, Thailand. The sample group consisted of 1) 75 people members of the community who set up murals in Suphan Buri Province, 2) five experts for evaluated product prototypes, 3) 400 tourists to satisfaction products, and 4) 22 participants for knowledge transfer. The research tools consisted of 1) The wisdom-based creative product prototype assessment form, 2. The wisdom-based creative product satisfaction questionnaire, and 3) The knowledge transfer project satisfaction assessment form. The data were analysed using mean, standard deviation, and content analysis. The research results were as follows: 1. The creative products of paper stencils framed from Wat Pratoosan and Wat No Bhuddhangkun had an overall satisfaction at a high level. The overall satisfaction was high for creative products using the 12 zodiac signs from Wat Chi Pa Khao to design and print on T-shirts. 2. The overall satisfaction in the knowledge transfer activities was at the highest level.
This paper presents a compelling and timely exploration of how traditional cultural assets, specifically the mural paintings of Suphan Buri Province, Thailand, can be leveraged for modern creative product development and community empowerment. The interdisciplinary approach, bridging fine art, local wisdom, product design, community development, and tourism, is particularly commendable. The authors clearly outline their dual objectives: to design creative products informed by this local wisdom and to facilitate knowledge transfer through training and workshops. This framework sets a strong foundation for addressing both cultural preservation and economic revitalization within the local community. The methodology appears robust for an initial phase, employing diverse sample groups including community members, expert evaluators, tourists, and workshop participants, reflecting a comprehensive approach to product validation and community engagement. The use of specific assessment forms and questionnaires, alongside quantitative (mean, standard deviation) and qualitative (content analysis) data analysis, lends credibility to the findings. The research successfully identifies high satisfaction levels for the developed creative products, such as paper stencils from specific temples and T-shirts featuring the 12 zodiac signs. Furthermore, the exceptionally high satisfaction with the knowledge transfer activities underscores the effectiveness of the community engagement strategy. While the abstract clearly highlights the success in achieving high satisfaction, a deeper elaboration on the specific elements of "local wisdom" beyond the visual motifs of the murals would enhance its impact. For instance, an explanation of how the cultural narratives, historical context, or symbolic meanings embedded in the murals were translated into design principles, rather than just direct imagery, would strengthen the paper's central premise. For a full paper, it would also be beneficial to discuss the economic viability and long-term sustainability of these products and the community enterprises they aim to foster. Future research could further explore the challenges encountered during product development and knowledge transfer, as well as the actual long-term uptake and economic impact within the community. Nevertheless, this study provides valuable insights into the potential for cultural heritage to drive innovative community-based initiatives.
