Abstract

Review

This study addresses a highly relevant public health issue: nutritional anemia among adolescent girls, specifically within the often-overlooked population of female Islamic boarding school students (santriwati) in Indonesia. The innovative approach of utilizing Edamame milk as an intervention is commendable for its potential to offer a sustainable and culturally appropriate solution. The paper's aim to explore the communication and adoption process of this innovation provides valuable insight into the practical implementation of nutritional interventions, moving beyond mere efficacy to understanding real-world uptake. This focus on the "how" of adoption, framed within Rogers' Diffusion of Innovation theory, adds a crucial dimension to public health research and practice. While the qualitative descriptive method is appropriate for understanding processes of communication and adoption, the abstract's current level of detail regarding the findings leaves room for further elaboration. Stating that the innovation "was adopted by santriwati through several stages consistent with Everett M. Rogers' Diffusion of Innovation theory" is a key finding, but a more explicit mention of which specific stages were observed, or even preliminary insights into the mechanisms of communication that facilitated adoption, would strengthen the abstract. For instance, did opinion leaders play a significant role, or were there particular characteristics of the Edamame milk that resonated with the santriwati? The abstract could also benefit from briefly mentioning the specific components or unique nutritional advantages of the Edamame milk, beyond just "inovasi," to help readers understand its potential impact. To enhance the paper's contribution, future revisions should thoroughly detail the communication strategies employed and provide richer descriptive data on the adoption stages within the santriwati community. A deeper discussion on the perceived attributes of the Edamame milk (e.g., relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, observability) from the santriwati's perspective would be highly valuable. Furthermore, while the study focuses on adoption, briefly discussing the potential nutritional impact or future plans for quantitative assessment of anemia reduction would broaden its appeal. This paper holds significant promise in guiding community-based nutritional interventions, and with clearer articulation of its qualitative findings, it can serve as an excellent case study for innovation diffusion in public health.
