Abstract

Review

"Visioni" presents a compelling and deeply empathetic artistic exploration of animal agency and suffering, stemming from Nada Prlja's powerful site-specific project "I Was Born to Fly." Originating at the RAVE – East Village Artist Residency, the work masterfully amplifies the declarations and grievances of animals through a visually resonant installation. The ingenious placement of signs, corresponding to the height of the animals they represent, ensures that no voice is deemed too weak or unheard, culminating in the poignant "I Was Born to Fly" message from a bird, which lends the title to the overarching work. This initial manifestation effectively challenges human-centric perspectives by physically manifesting a multispecies dialogue. For the pages of *Animot*, "Visioni" undergoes a thoughtful and equally impactful adaptation. The project evolves into a dynamic presentation where animal phrases scroll continuously, presented in multiple languages. This transition not only broadens the accessibility and reach of the animal voices but also underscores the universality of their experiences and pleas, transcending linguistic barriers. The emphasis on all languages being "equally important" reinforces the project's core message: every perspective holds weight, and the animal voice, in whatever form, deserves profound attention and understanding. This digital declination adds another layer of engagement, inviting prolonged contemplation of the non-human narrative. Overall, "Visioni" stands as a significant contribution to both contemporary art and critical animal studies. It skillfully bridges artistic innovation with ethical advocacy, compelling viewers to confront their relationship with the natural world and the often-silenced inhabitants within it. By giving form and voice to animal perspectives, whether through physical placement or scrolling text, the project fosters a crucial sense of empathy and responsibility. "Visioni" thus serves as a powerful call to listen, to observe, and ultimately, to imagine a more equitable and compassionate coexistence, making it a highly relevant and thought-provoking piece in current discourse.
