Review

The study titled "Strategi Bertahan Hidup Tenaga Kerja Musiman Di PTPN VII Cinta Manis Kabupaten Ogan Ilir" addresses a critical and highly relevant socio-economic issue concerning the vulnerability and resilience of seasonal workers. The research effectively sets out to describe the survival strategies employed by this specific demographic within the context of PTPN VII Cinta Manis, Ogan Ilir Regency. Utilizing a qualitative approach with a descriptive method and snowball sampling for informant selection, the study’s methodological design appears well-suited to delve into the nuanced and lived experiences of these workers, thereby contributing valuable insights into their adaptive mechanisms in challenging circumstances. The findings reveal a stark reality concerning the socio-economic conditions of seasonal workers, characterized by significant limitations in education, employment opportunities, income, housing, and access to health services. In response to these pressing challenges, the research identifies three primary survival strategies. Firstly, "tying the belt tighter" signifies a direct response to economic scarcity through reduced expenditure on basic necessities, particularly food. Secondly, "alternative subsistence ethics" highlights proactive measures such as engaging in side jobs and leveraging familial support to augment household income. Lastly, the crucial role of "social relations/social networks" is underscored, demonstrating how workers rely on relationships with local vendors for essential goods and seek assistance from relatives and foremen during periods of economic hardship. These strategies collectively paint a picture of resourceful adaptation within a constrained environment. This study's strength lies in its ability to meticulously document and categorize the diverse coping mechanisms employed by seasonal workers, providing a clear understanding of their daily struggles and ingenious solutions. The qualitative approach allows for a rich description of these strategies, which are often overlooked in broader economic analyses. While the abstract effectively outlines the findings, future iterations of this research or related studies could benefit from exploring the long-term sustainability and potential psychological impacts of these survival strategies, as well as examining policy implications for improving the structural conditions faced by seasonal workers.
