Abstract

Review

This article proposes a timely and relevant synthesis of discussions surrounding contemporary authoritarianism, moving from an international context to the specific Brazilian scenario. The author's stated aim is to reconstruct the contributions of key international thinkers such as Klaus Dörre, Wilhelm Heitmeyer, and Arlie Hochschild, demonstrating their insights into the relationship between emerging social insecurity and the rise of authoritarianism in countries like Germany and the United States. Subsequently, the analysis pivots to prominent Brazilian scholars, including João Cezar de Castro Rocha, Jessé Souza, and Marcos Nobre, promising a comprehensive overview of the domestic debate. This broad comparative scope suggests a valuable contribution to understanding a critical global phenomenon. A significant strength outlined in the abstract is the article's dual focus, offering a comparative lens that is often missing in studies concentrated solely on national contexts. By bringing together diverse theoretical perspectives from both the Global North and Brazil, the paper has the potential to illuminate shared mechanisms and unique local specificities driving authoritarian tendencies. The explicit intention to connect a "new scenario of social insecurity" with the rise of authoritarianism, drawing on established authors, provides a solid conceptual foundation. Furthermore, the commitment to critically engaging with the Brazilian debate, seeking to identify its "limits and possibilities," suggests a thoughtful and nuanced approach to local scholarship. While the abstract clearly articulates the scope and the authors to be engaged, it would benefit from a clearer indication of the author's own analytical contribution beyond synthesis. The promise to point out "limits and possibilities" in the Brazilian discussion is intriguing, but the abstract does not specify the nature of these critiques or how they will be developed. For instance, will the author propose a novel framework for understanding Brazilian authoritarianism, or offer a comparative assessment of the applicability of international theories to the Brazilian case? A stronger articulation of the original argument or the specific interpretative lens that will guide the comparative analysis would enhance the abstract's impact and set clearer expectations for the insights readers can expect beyond a comprehensive literature review.
