Abstract

Abstract: The phenomenon of "fatherlessness," or the absence of a father figure, has become an increasingly concerning social issue, including in Indonesia. Children growing up without a father face various negative impacts, such as psychological disorders, difficulties in forming self-identity, and increased involvement in risky behaviours. The church has the potential to act as an agent of restoration through mentoring based on love and spiritual values. This study aims to examine the church’s mentoring principles for the "fatherless" generation based on 1 Thessalonians 2:7 and identify its implications and logical applications in church life. This study employs a qualitative approach with a hermeneutic analysis of 1 Thessalonians 2:7 and a literature review from relevant books and journals. The findings indicate that church mentoring for the "fatherless" generation can be realized through a gentle and loving approach, effective discipleship, character and identity formation, and emotional healing. The church can also function as a community that provides spiritual and psychosocial support for children who lack a father figure. The implications of this study emphasize that the church must develop a sustainable discipleship system, instil Christ-centered values, and create a supportive environment for young people experiencing "fatherlessness." The novelty of this research lies in its perspective on spiritually-based mentoring, highlighting the church’s role as a "home" for those who have lost a father figure.

Review

The study, "Prinsip-Prinsip Pendampingan Generasi yang Fatherless menurut 1 Tesalonika 2:7," addresses the critical social issue of fatherlessness and its severe negative impacts on children, particularly within the Indonesian context. It thoughtfully posits the church as a potential agent of restoration through spiritually-based mentoring. The research aims to delineate church mentoring principles for the fatherless generation, grounding its approach in 1 Thessalonians 2:7, and subsequently to identify the practical implications of these principles for church life. Employing a qualitative methodology that combines hermeneutic analysis of the chosen biblical text with a literature review, the study identifies that effective church mentoring encompasses a gentle and loving approach, effective discipleship, character and identity formation, and emotional healing, positioning the church as a vital community for spiritual and psychosocial support. The research tackles a highly relevant and pressing social concern, underscoring the urgency for effective interventions. The selection of 1 Thessalonians 2:7 as a foundational text is particularly apt, as this verse emphasizes the tender, nurturing aspect of pastoral care, aligning well with the need for a "gentle and loving approach." The qualitative and hermeneutic methodology is appropriate for deriving rich, context-sensitive insights from scripture and applying them to contemporary challenges. While the abstract presents a comprehensive list of findings—such as effective discipleship and emotional healing—the full paper would ideally elaborate on the explicit interpretive bridge between 1 Thessalonians 2:7 and each of these detailed outcomes to fully substantiate the principles. The claim of "novelty" in its perspective on spiritually-based mentoring, emphasizing the church’s role as a "home," is a powerful re-articulation and application of fundamental biblical truths to a specific modern crisis, offering a fresh and compelling framework for engagement rather than a completely new theological construct. This study offers significant practical implications for local churches, providing a clear roadmap for developing sustainable discipleship systems, embedding Christ-centered values, and cultivating a genuinely supportive environment for young people experiencing fatherlessness. By framing the church as a "home" for those who have lost a father figure, the research not only diagnoses a societal problem but also proposes a biblically-grounded, compassionate, and holistic solution. Its value lies in its actionable insights, making it a valuable resource for church leaders, educators, and practitioners committed to ministering effectively to this vulnerable demographic within their communities. The research makes a timely and important contribution to understanding the church's potential in addressing critical social issues through a spiritual lens.
