Abstract

Abstract: Elderly individuals with non-hemorrhagic stroke face high risks of balance disturbances and falls due to motor and cognitive decline. The Otago Exercise Program, a structured regimen to strengthen lower limb muscles and improve balance, has proven effective in reducing fall risk among older adults. This study aims to implement the program to reduce instability, an elderly patient with non-hemorrhagic stroke at the True Love Nursing Home. Using a case study approach within the nursing care process framework, physical examination and revealed weakness and stiffness in the left extremities, with muscle strength scores of 3/3/4/4. The intervention emphasized mobility improvement through six days of Otago Exercise. Interventions followed the plan with goals, contributing to gerontological nursing knowledge. Keywords: Elderly; Non-Hemorrhagic; Otago Exercise.

Review

This abstract addresses a critical and highly relevant issue in gerontological nursing: the high risk of balance disturbances and falls among elderly individuals with non-hemorrhagic stroke. The focus on implementing the Otago Exercise Program, an evidence-based intervention for fall prevention, is commendable and aligns with best practices for improving patient safety and quality of life in nursing home settings. The study's aim to reduce instability using this program within a specific population at the True Love Nursing Home is clear and pertinent. The abstract effectively outlines the rationale for the intervention, highlighting the motor and cognitive decline contributing to instability in this vulnerable population. The selection of the Otago Exercise Program is appropriate given its proven efficacy in strengthening lower limb muscles and improving balance. The description of the methodological approach as a case study within a nursing care process framework is suitable for clinical application and aligns with the practical realities of individualized patient care. The initial assessment findings of weakness and stiffness in the extremities provide a baseline context for the intervention. However, a significant limitation of this abstract is the absence of specific results or outcomes regarding the effectiveness of the Otago Exercise in reducing instability for the studied individual. While it states that "the intervention emphasized mobility improvement through six days of Otago Exercise" and "interventions followed the plan with goals," it does not present any quantifiable data or qualitative observations on whether the intervention successfully achieved its aim of reducing instability. To fully evaluate the impact of this implementation, a complete paper would need to detail the pre- and post-intervention assessments of instability (e.g., using standardized balance scales, gait parameters, or reported fall incidents) and present the observed changes. As a single case study, its generalizability is inherently limited, though it can provide valuable insights for future research and clinical practice if concrete outcomes are demonstrated.
