Abstract

This community service activity aims to enhance the awareness and capacity of youth in implementing sustainable lifestyles in the Tanjung Dapura area, Makassar. The main problems faced by the community include low levels of waste management practices, high dependence on single-use plastics, and limited environmental literacy. The implementation method applied a participatory approach through several stages, including initial observation, interactive counseling, group discussions, and simulations of sustainable lifestyle practices. The results indicate a significant improvement in participants’ understanding and awareness of environmental sustainability, reflected in changes in perspectives and the emergence of commitments to reduce plastic use and manage waste independently. Furthermore, participants demonstrated strong enthusiasm to act as agents of change within their communities. Therefore, this activity is considered effective in empowering youth as key drivers in promoting environmental sustainability in coastal areas.

Review

The paper details a highly relevant community service initiative focused on empowering youth in Tanjung Dapura, Makassar, to adopt sustainable lifestyles. The stated aim of enhancing awareness and capacity, particularly in addressing critical local issues such as poor waste management, high single-use plastic dependency, and limited environmental literacy, is commendable. The adoption of a participatory methodology, encompassing initial observation, interactive counseling, group discussions, and practical simulations, appears well-suited to the context of community engagement and educational outreach. This approach inherently fosters ownership and direct involvement, which are vital for sustainable behavioral change. The reported outcomes underscore the efficacy of the program in achieving its immediate objectives. The abstract highlights a significant improvement in participants' understanding and awareness of environmental sustainability, evidenced by shifts in perspective and concrete commitments to reduce plastic use and manage waste independently. Particularly encouraging is the enthusiasm demonstrated by participants to act as agents of change within their communities. This indicates a successful translation of knowledge into motivation for action, positioning youth as pivotal drivers for environmental preservation in coastal areas, as the abstract aptly concludes. While the abstract clearly conveys positive short-term impacts, future reporting or subsequent research could benefit from a more detailed presentation of quantifiable metrics to substantiate the "significant improvement" observed. For instance, including pre- and post-intervention assessments of specific knowledge points, attitude scales, or even observed behavioral changes (e.g., through waste audits) would strengthen the evidence base. Furthermore, discussing strategies for sustaining these behavioral changes and commitments over the long term, beyond the immediate activity period, would add valuable insights into the project's lasting impact and potential for scalability to other vulnerable coastal communities.
