This paper presents a compelling account of a community engagement initiative focused on the sustainable management of biomass waste in KPH Bulungan, North Kalimantan. The core objective was to empower 25 members of the local Forest Farmer Group (KTH) by introducing pyrolysis technology for converting biomass, traditionally disposed of through open burning, into economically valuable products: biochar and liquid smoke. This project effectively addresses both environmental concerns associated with open burning and the need for local economic development, demonstrating a practical approach to leveraging local resources for community benefit. The methodology employed was Participatory Action Research (PAR), unfolding in three well-defined stages: theoretical and practical training, continuous mentorship, and evaluation with a focus on sustainability planning. Data analysis combined quantitative measures, such as pre-post test score comparisons, product yield calculations, and financial feasibility analysis, with qualitative insights gained from group discussions and participant observation. The results highlight significant community capacity building, with post-test scores improving by an impressive 43.9 points. Furthermore, the initiative successfully demonstrated the production of biochar with yields of 25-35% and liquid smoke with yields of 35-40%, paving the way for new business opportunities generating a gross profit of Rp 400,000 per production batch. This community service activity stands out for its practical impact and robust approach to ensuring program longevity. The successful transfer of pyrolysis technology not only transformed an environmental burden into a valuable resource but also fostered local entrepreneurship and improved livelihoods. The commitment to sustainability, evidenced by the establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and a KTH action plan, underscores the potential for lasting positive change beyond the project's direct implementation period. Overall, this work offers a valuable model for sustainable resource management and community empowerment in similar rural contexts, demonstrating a successful integration of environmental stewardship with economic development.
