Abstract

Understanding the attitude of independence in everyday life is a familiar thing. Not all migrant students have the same independence, some have difficulty adjusting to independent life. Readiness and emotionality instilled through proper parenting will be a solid foundation for children’s success in living life away from the home environment. This study aims to (1) explore the relationship between the independence of UNNES overseas of parenting and (2) analyze using symbolic interactionism by Mead. This type research is a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. Subject selection using a snowball sampling technique. Data collection techniques using in-depth interviews and observation. The results showed that parenting plays an important role in shaping the independent character of overseas students. Students who from childhood are accustomed to responsibilities such as managing personal needs and being involved in decision-making have better independence and adjusment abilities when migrating. Conversely, students who are accustomed to living in comfort and depending on their parents tend to have difficulty in adjusting and forming independence when they are overseas. From the symbolic interactionism perspective, overseas students internalize the values obtained from the family, so parental parenting acts as a mediator in the formation of independence. Migrant students also interpretroles and responsibilities based on symbols, meanings, and experiences constructed from social interactions in the family environment.
