Humanistic counseling as a strategy for overcoming low self-esteem in asthmatic patients. Discover how humanistic counseling effectively addresses low self-esteem in asthmatic patients. A Boyolali case study shows improved self-acceptance and positive self-perception.
The aim of this research is to determine the extent to which humanistic counseling plays a role in overcoming low self-esteem. This research is a case study research on a patient suffering from asthma at a regional hospital in Boyolali. Data collection was carried out using interviews, observation, and psychological testing methods. Based on the results of the assessment that had been carried out, the patient felt limited in carrying out all activities due to her asthma, so this made her even lower in self-esteem. The condition of low self-esteem has many negative impacts on the patient's life, such as being unproductive and limiting social contact with the surrounding environment. Humanistic counseling is one strategy that can help patients overcome low self-esteem. The patient begins to accept her condition and express the positive side of her abilities.
This paper presents a compelling case study exploring the application of humanistic counseling as a strategy to address low self-esteem in an asthmatic patient. The research effectively highlights the significant psychological impact of chronic illness, specifically asthma, on an individual's self-perception and daily functioning, leading to limitations in activities, reduced productivity, and social withdrawal. By focusing on a patient at a regional hospital in Boyolali, the study grounds its findings in a real-world clinical context. The use of interviews, observation, and psychological testing demonstrates a comprehensive approach to data collection within the case study framework, providing valuable insights into the patient's journey and the initial positive shifts observed through the intervention. A key strength of this abstract lies in its clear articulation of a relevant and under-explored area: the intersection of physical health conditions, mental well-being, and therapeutic interventions. The selection of humanistic counseling is particularly pertinent, given its emphasis on client self-acceptance, personal growth, and self-actualization, which directly counter the feelings of limitation and low self-worth experienced by the patient. The indication that the patient began to accept her condition and express positive aspects of her abilities underscores the potential efficacy of this approach. This study contributes to the literature by illustrating how specific psychological counseling methods can be tailored to improve the quality of life for individuals grappling with the multifaceted challenges of chronic disease. While promising, the nature of this research as a single case study inherently limits the generalizability of its findings. The abstract could benefit from more specific methodological details, such as the duration and intensity of the humanistic counseling sessions, the specific techniques employed, and the nature of the "psychological testing methods" used for both initial assessment and outcome measurement. For future research, it would be valuable to expand this inquiry to include a larger sample size, perhaps employing a pre-post design with standardized measures of self-esteem, or even a comparative study with other counseling modalities. This would provide more robust empirical evidence to support the claims of efficacy and further establish humanistic counseling as a validated strategy for overcoming low self-esteem in asthmatic and potentially other chronically ill populations.
