Abstract

Review

This study adeptly investigates the critical relationships between psychological well-being, gratitude, and loneliness among university students, a highly relevant issue given the increasing stress and unique challenges faced by emerging adults in higher education. Employing a proportional stratified random sampling technique, the authors collected data from 200 active Psychology students aged 18-25 from UNS, utilizing well-validated and reliable scales for loneliness, psychological well-being, and gratitude. The findings clearly indicate a significant negative relationship between both psychological well-being and gratitude with student loneliness, with the combined model explaining a substantial portion of the variance (R=0.623). Specifically, psychological well-being demonstrated a moderately strong and significant negative association with loneliness, while gratitude also showed a significant negative association, albeit a very weak one. These results underscore the importance of both psychological well-being and gratitude as protective factors against student loneliness, with psychological well-being emerging as a particularly potent buffer. The methodology employed in this study is robust, featuring an appropriate sampling strategy and the use of psychometrically sound instruments, as evidenced by the high internal consistency reliability coefficients. The clear articulation of the research problem and the direct, quantitative approach to addressing it are strengths, allowing for a straightforward interpretation of the findings regarding the predictive power of psychological well-being and gratitude. The statistical analysis, particularly the F-test and partial regression analyses, is appropriate for examining these relationships, and the presentation of specific coefficients and significance levels enhances the transparency and interpretability of the results. The identification of psychological well-being as a stronger predictor provides valuable insight for designing targeted interventions aimed at mitigating student loneliness. While the study offers valuable insights, some limitations warrant consideration and provide avenues for future research. The sample, consisting exclusively of Psychology students from a single university, may limit the generalizability of findings to the broader student population in Indonesia or students from other disciplines, who might experience different stressors or have varying levels of psychological awareness. Furthermore, the cross-sectional design precludes the establishment of causal relationships, suggesting that a longitudinal approach could provide deeper insights into the dynamic interplay between these variables over time. The "very weak" yet significant relationship between gratitude and loneliness, while statistically notable, might suggest a limited practical impact, prompting further exploration into potential mediating or moderating factors that could elucidate its role. Future studies could benefit from expanding the sample diversity and incorporating qualitative methods to gain a more nuanced understanding of students' lived experiences and the mechanisms through which psychological well-being and gratitude influence loneliness.
