Keywords: Arsitektur Berkelanjutan, Guest House dan Meeting Room, Kalimantan Timur, Solusi Berbasis Alam.ABSTRACT This study investigates the extent to which Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) principles are reflected in the design of a Guest House and Meeting Room located in Samboja, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. NBS are defined as design and planning strategies that utilize natural processes and ecosystems to address societal challenges while enhancing ecological and human well-being. In tropical architecture, these principles are often expressed through low-impact development, site-sensitive placement, climate responsiveness, and material adaptation to local contexts. Using a qualitative case study approach, this research examines site survey data, design documentation, and conceptual development to evaluate the project’s alignment with NBS frameworks. The findings indicate partial alignment: the project preserved existing trees and employed a raised-floor system that minimized cut and fill, consistent with ecosystem preservation principles. However, limitations were found in the use of fixed glazing without operable ventilation, limited shading strategies, and reliance on industrial materials that merely imitate natural aesthetics. These results suggest that while the project intuitively incorporates certain NBS elements, a more systematic application of NBS principles is needed to achieve sustainable and climate-responsive architecture in Indonesia.Kata kunci: East Kalimantan, Guest House and Meeting Room, Nature-Based Solutions, Sustainable Architecture.
This study tackles a highly pertinent topic in contemporary architecture, specifically the integration of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in building design within a tropical context. Focusing on a Guest House and Meeting Room in Samboja, East Kalimantan, the research aims to critically evaluate the extent to which NBS principles are applied in practice. The abstract clearly defines NBS as strategies leveraging natural processes for ecological and human well-being, translating these into practical architectural expressions like low-impact development, climate responsiveness, and site-sensitive material adaptation. The chosen qualitative case study approach, utilizing site surveys, design documentation, and conceptual development, provides a suitable framework for this investigation, making the study relevant for architects and urban planners interested in sustainable design practices in Indonesia. A key strength of this research lies in its clear articulation of NBS principles within tropical architecture and its meticulous examination of a specific project. The findings reveal a commendable partial alignment with NBS, particularly through the preservation of existing trees and the strategic use of a raised-floor system, which effectively minimizes site disturbance and cut-and-fill operations. These elements demonstrate an intuitive understanding of ecosystem preservation and minimal intervention, which are fundamental to sustainable development. By highlighting these successes, the study offers valuable insights into practical applications of NBS that can be adopted or scaled in similar projects, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of how these principles can be integrated into design within the region. Despite the identified positive aspects, the study also critically uncovers significant limitations in the project's adherence to comprehensive NBS implementation. The reliance on fixed glazing without operable ventilation, insufficient shading strategies, and the pervasive use of industrial materials that merely mimic natural aesthetics represent considerable shortcomings that hinder true climate responsiveness and material adaptation. The conclusion, advocating for a more systematic application of NBS, is particularly crucial. This suggests a need for deeper integration beyond intuitive incorporation, offering a clear direction for future architectural endeavors in Indonesia to move towards genuinely sustainable and climate-responsive buildings that fully embody the holistic benefits of Nature-Based Solutions.
