Abstract

Este artigo apresenta o processo de restauração de uma escultura sacra de gesso intitulada Santo Antônio, pertencente à Família Iora. A imagem está inserida no Capitel de Santo Antônio, localizado na comunidade Sete de Setembro, no município de Coronel Pilar, Rio Grande do Sul. O trabalho integrou as atividades extensionistas do Laboratório Aberto de Conservação e Restauração de Pintura, do curso de Conservação e Restauração de Bens Culturais Móveis do Instituto de Ciências Humanas da Universidade Federal de Pelotas. A metodologia empregada na restauração dessa imagem devocional incluiu o estudo iconográfico, a contextualização social e histórica da obra, a análise do estado de conservação, a restauração propriamente dita e, por fim, a devolução da escultura à comunidade, no dia da festa do santo, realizada em 13 de junho de 2025.

The restoration of the Santo Antônio image, belonging to the Iora Family and located in the Capitel de Santo Antônio in Coronel Pilar, Rio Grande do Sul, highlights the important role of university extension projects in preserving local heritage. The planned return of the sculpture to the community on the saint's feast day further emphasizes the project's deep connection to local life and devotional practices. Overall, the described work represents an excellent example of how academic institutions can contribute meaningfully to cultural preservation and community engagement. The integration of rigorous restoration practices with a profound understanding of the object's devotional context is particularly noteworthy, enhancing both the material integrity and the cultural value of the artifact. This project not only serves to physically preserve a significant piece of local heritage but also strengthens the cultural ties between the community and its traditions, offering a valuable model for sustainable heritage management that honors both the material and intangible aspects of cultural artifacts.
