This paper tackles a highly relevant and socially significant topic: the effects of discrimination and effective coping mechanisms, using the popular film "Crazy Rich Asians" as an accessible and engaging case study. The research clearly outlines its objectives, aiming to identify both the negative impacts of discrimination and the strategies employed by the main character to achieve positive outcomes. The choice of a descriptive qualitative method is appropriate for an in-depth analysis of cinematic narrative, and the systematic approach of selecting, grouping, and analyzing scenes of discrimination promises a structured examination of the film's content. The findings presented are particularly insightful, detailing four negative effects—marginalization, disempowerment, low self-esteem and self-identity, and negative behaviours—which resonate with real-world experiences of discrimination. Crucially, the study also identifies four constructive coping strategies: focusing on strengths, seeking support systems, cultivating clear thinking, and avoiding rumination. The subsequent positive transformations observed, such as increased courage, toughness, and confidence, highlight the potential for resilience in the face of adversity. While the abstract mentions Stafrace as the fundamental theory, a brief elaboration on how this theoretical framework is specifically applied to the cinematic data would further enhance its methodological transparency. Overall, this research offers a valuable contribution to understanding the portrayal of discrimination and resilience in popular culture. By analyzing a widely-consumed film, the study provides an accessible lens through which to explore complex social issues and psychological responses. The identification of both negative effects and empowering coping strategies makes this work potentially useful for educational discussions on social justice, mental health, and personal development. Future research could expand upon these findings by analyzing a broader range of media representations or exploring comparative studies across different cultural or narrative contexts to further validate and deepen the understanding of these coping mechanisms.
