Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning of the word marriage in the Qur'an using a semantic approach developed by Toshihiko Izutsu. This approach includes an analysis of basic meaning, relational meaning, the structure of meaning in the Qur'anic value system (weltanschauung), as well as a comparison of pre-Qur'anic and Qur'anic meanings. This study uses a phenomenological method with a literature study strategy to explore the meaning of words in the text of the Qur'an while reflecting on the social experiences that develop in society. The results of the study show that the meaning of the word marriage from the pre-Qur'anic to the post-Qur'anic period remains consistent as a sacred and legal bond or agreement between two individuals. The Qur'an emphasizes that marriage aims to create a sakinah, mawaddah, and rahmah domestic life. However, in the contemporary social context, this meaning is distorted due to dysfunctional experiences in the family, inequality in gender relations, and the influence of negative narratives on social media. The phenomenon of fear of marriage is not a rejection of sharia, but a response to social failure in realizing Qur'anic values in an applicative manner.

Review

This study presents a timely and relevant inquiry into the semantic dimensions of marriage within the Qur'an, expertly leveraging Toshihiko Izutsu's robust semantic approach. The integration of Izutsu's framework—covering basic meaning, relational meaning, *weltanschauung*, and diachronic comparison—with a phenomenological method grounded in literature study, offers a methodologically sound foundation for exploring a concept central to Islamic life. The stated aim to not only analyze the Qur'anic meaning but also to connect it to the contemporary phenomenon of fear of marriage is particularly commendable, positioning the research at the intersection of theological understanding and pressing social issues. The findings eloquently articulate the consistent sacred and legal essence of marriage from pre-Qur'anic to post-Qur'anic periods, emphasizing its Qur'anic purpose of fostering *sakinah, mawaddah*, and *rahmah*. A significant contribution of this work lies in its insightful diagnosis of how these foundational meanings are distorted in the contemporary context, attributing this to factors such as dysfunctional family experiences, gender inequality, and pervasive negative narratives on social media. Crucially, the study reframes the "fear of marriage" not as a rejection of religious injunctions but as a rational response to the observed "social failure" in actualizing Qur'anic values. This distinction offers a nuanced perspective that can inform both religious discourse and sociological analyses. While the abstract provides a compelling overview, the full paper would benefit from further elaboration on the phenomenological aspect, particularly how the "reflection on social experiences" actively shapes or is integrated into the semantic analysis itself, beyond just providing context for the contemporary distortion. Additionally, given the profound conclusion regarding "social failure," a discussion on potential interventions or pathways for religious communities, educational institutions, or policymakers to bridge the gap between ideal Qur'anic values and their practical application would significantly enhance the paper's impact. Nevertheless, this research offers a profound and necessary contribution to understanding the evolving perception of marriage in Muslim societies, bridging historical textual analysis with urgent contemporary concerns.
