The ability to use formal language and technical terms is an important foundation for efficient office management, as it ensures accurate and smooth communication in the workplace. This study examines the results of a quiz on the mastery of formal vocabulary and technical terms among students in Class A of the Office Administration Education Study Program, class of 2024, at Medan State University. The main objective is to determine the extent to which students understand the elements of formal language related to the field of administration. The method used is quantitative descriptive, examining data from 45 participants through a quiz consisting of multiple-choice and short essay questions, covering 10 questions related to formal vocabulary (such as spelling and formal word choice) and technical terms. The research findings show that the average mastery score reached 72%, with strength in understanding technical terms (78%), but there were significant weaknesses in the use of standard words (65%), especially in more complex contexts. Factors contributing to this include a lack of practical training and minimal exposure to formal media. The conclusions of this study highlight the importance of integrating appropriate language modules into the administration curriculum, along with interactive workshop activities to improve student skills. The practical implications of these findings are improvements in the quality of graduates who are able to meet the demands of today's administration, thereby supporting organizational efficiency in the digital age.
This study addresses a highly pertinent topic within professional education: the mastery of formal language and technical terminology among office administration students. The title and abstract clearly articulate the research objective, which is to assess students' understanding of formal language elements crucial for effective office management. The quantitative descriptive method employed, utilizing quiz data from 45 participants, appears sound for achieving this objective. The study's contribution lies in empirically quantifying the current linguistic proficiency levels of future administrative professionals, providing valuable insights for curriculum development. The findings reveal a nuanced picture of student competence. While students demonstrate a commendable grasp of technical terms, indicated by a 78% mastery score, a significant gap exists in their ability to use standard words, especially in more complex contexts, evidenced by a 65% score. The identification of factors such as a lack of practical training and minimal exposure to formal media as contributors to these weaknesses is particularly insightful. The 10-question quiz, incorporating multiple-choice and short essay formats, seems appropriate for evaluating both recall and application, though the full paper would benefit from elaborating on the specific nature of these "complex contexts." The practical implications drawn from this research are robust and directly actionable. The recommendation to integrate specific language modules and interactive workshops into the administration curriculum is a logical and necessary step to bridge the identified skill gaps. By doing so, the study directly contributes to enhancing the quality of graduates, ensuring they are better equipped to meet the demands of modern office administration and foster organizational efficiency in an increasingly digital and communication-driven professional landscape. This research provides a strong foundation for pedagogical interventions aimed at improving linguistic precision in administrative education.
