Abstract

Review

This article proposes an intriguing analysis of water symbolism within Eneida de Moraes's chronicle, "Ouçam os ruídos dos jacumãs," from her work "Cão da madrugada." The study's objective is clear: to meticulously examine how water's symbolic manifestations contribute to the creation of metaphors, thereby enriching the literary text. This focus promises a valuable contribution to studies on Brazilian literature, particularly concerning Eneida de Moraes's oeuvre and the representation of the Amazonian cultural landscape. The chosen chronicle, which depicts the life of the Amazonian *caboclo ribeirinho* and the chronicler's personal memories of the river, offers a rich textual ground for such a symbolic investigation. The theoretical framework employed appears robust and well-suited for the task. The reliance on Massaud Moisés's (2012) perspective on the literary chronicle provides a solid foundation for understanding the genre's inherent lyricism and its connection to real events and memory. Crucially, the integration of Gaston Bachelard's (2018) work on the symbolism of water offers a powerful analytical lens. Bachelard's detailed categorization and attribution of diverse meanings and sensations to the natural element of water are particularly appropriate for dissecting the nuanced symbolic layers present in Moraes's narrative. This dual theoretical approach provides a comprehensive methodological pathway to uncover the deeper significations of water in the text. The anticipated finding, that water transcends its material form to become a conduit for the imagination and the symbolic world of the *ribeirinhos*, suggests a profound understanding of the chronicle's cultural and psychological dimensions. This study has the potential to illuminate not only Eneida de Moraes's distinctive narrative style but also the broader interplay between nature, memory, and identity in Brazilian Amazonian literature. Further elaboration on the specific cultural nuances of the *ribeirinho* symbolic world, perhaps drawing on ethnographical or anthropological perspectives in conjunction with Bachelard, could further strengthen the article's impact and offer even richer insights into the deep connection between the people, the river, and the literary imagination.
